With all the usual qualities of durability, strength and skid-resistance associated with SteelPhalt products made from steel slag aggregate, SteelFlow also uses modified bitumen which gives the material greater flexibility and elasticity. SteelFlow is, quite simply, miles more economical than standard materials of 30mm or 40mm. It only needs to be laid at a depth of 15mm, resulting in faster installation times, reduced labour and greater surfacing areas for the same volume of product.

Like many other products within the SteelPhalt ‘stable’, SteelFlow constitutes a very high percentage of recycled materials, 95% in this case – giving it added appeal to suppliers who wish to meet green criteria.

In a recent case study, our client was looking to cover a section of highway covering a 785 metre stretch. The plan was to use a traditional 14mm dense surface course laid at a depth of 40mm.

It was suggested that they consider using SteelFlow as an alternative solution to be laid at 15mm thick.

By using the SteelFlow material 59% less asphalt would be required to surface the job saving 46% on material costs.

Our SteelFlow product is easy to transport and very quick and simple to lay, significantly reducing downtime for any works.

Typical applications include: Single Carriageways, Approaches to Major & Minor Junctions (dual and single carriageways), bends (on all types of roads) including motorway link roads & other hazards that require combined braking and cornering.

SteelFlow is a road surfacing product whose characteristics lend themselves to the adjectival superlative ‘ultra’. It is claimed to be a highly durable surfacing, is laid very thin indeed and has sustainability credentials that are close to impeccable.

Roads refurbished with ultra thin Steelflow do not require modification of kerb levels or street furniture. Local authorities there are finding they get more value for their money, especially in terms of square metres covered.

SteelFlow is also showing excellent skid resistance figures over the investigation level when tested under SteelPhalt’s grip testing programme, especially through the summer months.

Specimens have been subjected to a total of 100,000 wheel passes as required by the BBA, equivalent to traffic wear during 5 to 10 year’s in-service life. In each case, SteelFlow met the requirements for the above applications, proving its credentials as a durable and effective road surfacing product.
